Chapter fifteen

Stranded

Jenna glared at me. Turning back to Tracker, she growled. “Get Morris on the line now.”

“Already done.”

“Lieutenant Morris, this is Major Plural. What is going on?” Jenna struggled to remain calm.

Morris’ voice came online. It was cold and determined, yet nervous. “You’re not a major, Lieutenant Plural. Whether you agree with it or not, the president gave a lawful command. I’m not going to be party to you bringing more suffering to the American people. We are setting a course for Earth where we will turn this ship over to the authorities and go home to our families.”

“You said you would support me!”

Morris scoffed. “It was that or get a bullet in the head like the captain.”

Jenna slammed a fist on the console. “You’re just going to abandon us here?”

“The Europeans will be there eventually to take you into custody. You will be safe.”

“Morris, you better start praying to whatever fucked-up god watches over you because when I get out of here, I will be coming for you, and I promise I will be the last thing you ever see!”

“Go to hell, Lieutenant Plural,” Morris replied softly.

“She’s cut the line, Ma’am,” Tracker nervously advised the major.

Jenna threw her hands up in disbelief. “She has left us damn well stranded here.”

“Is there no way that Stacey can land?” I asked.

“None at all. The ship’s undercarriage is not designed for it,” Jenna said, then turned to Tracker. “Is Stacey still online?” Tracker nodded. “Stacey, can you return to a Phobos orbit and still keep track of the Chesty?”

“That’s an affirmative, boss,” Stacey replied. “Mission accomplished on Deimos. Oxygen tanks full and plenty in reserve.”

“Good work, Stacey. Let me know when you get here. We will try to work something out from down here. Plural out.” She slammed her fist on the console once again and stepped back. “I knew we shouldn’t have trusted that whore.”

“It’s my fault. I suggested she stay in command,” I said weakly.

She spun upon me, glaring up into my face. “I know it’s your fault, Mr. Phelkar, but it’s not your place to judge yourself; it’s mine. So, shut the fuck up until I ask your opinion.”

I was pretty taken aback by the sudden rebuke. I almost thought Jenna was about to hit me, but instead, she turned away and called to one of the troopers.

“Go take an inventory of all the supplies they have here. Ensure we have enough food and water to last an extended stay.”

“We probably only have a few hours until the Peons arrive,” I said.

Tracker looked at me. “Did you forget I reprogrammed the satellite system? Their own defensive system will shoot them down.”

It was as if my stupidity was the final straw, and before I could respond to Tracker, Jenna said, “I suggest you stay out of my way for now, Mr. Phelkar.” She growled under her breath, not looking back at me.

Humiliated, I walked out of the Control Center, hearing her bark further preparation orders for our extended stay in the Peon base.
